SiteWise Prequalification for Contractors — Requirements, Evidence and Assessment Support
SiteWise assessors look for evidence of an active H&S system. ThinkSafe helps you collect and organise that evidence through your daily operations.
What SiteWise Assessors Actually Look For
SiteWise assesses whether your health and safety system is actively used on site, not just written in documents. Assessors look for current, verifiable evidence across areas such as:
Leadership, H&S policy and worker participation
Hazard identification and risk management in practice
Site-specific safety planning and task-level controls
Incident and near-miss reporting, investigations and follow-up actions
Training records, competency and supervision
Contractor and subcontractor management processes
Inspections, monitoring and continuous improvement activities
Emergency preparedness and response
Need support with other pre-qualification schemes?
The same evidence you collect in ThinkSafe can usually be reused across other New Zealand pre-qualification schemes:
The challenge: Most contractors have some of this in place, but struggle to demonstrate it with organised, current evidence.

Demonstrating Genuine Practice
SiteWise assessors want to see your system in action. Examples of evidence ThinkSafe helps you collect:

Safety inspection reports with photos and corrective actions

Training records with dates, topics, and competency checks
Subcontractor induction records
Equipment maintenance logs
The difference: This isn't retrospective form-filling. It's capturing real work as it happens.

Our HASANZ-registered advisors are available to help with your pre-qualification questions.
Q1. What is SiteWise prequalification and who requires it?
SiteWise is an independent contractor health and safety prequalification system administered by Site Safe NZ. Principal contractors, councils and infrastructure clients use SiteWise grades to assess whether subcontractors have effective safety systems in place before awarding work.
Q2. What does the SiteWise assessment involve?
You complete an online questionnaire and upload supporting evidence across areas such as hazard management, incident reporting, inductions and training, safety meetings, monitoring activities and subcontractor management. Evidence generally needs to be current and relevant to your operations.
Q3. What evidence do SiteWise assessors look for?
Assessors expect recent, credible records that show your system is being used in day-to-day work — including hazard assessments, toolbox talks, incident and near-miss reports, training records, risk registers, inspections and follow-up actions.
Q4. How does ThinkSafe help with SiteWise prequalification?
ThinkSafe provides:
A complete H&S documentation framework aligned to assessment topics
Mobile tools for inspections, hazards, incidents and meetings
Time-stamped records with photos, signatures and user activity
Guidance on which records map to which assessment questions
We don’t submit the assessment for you or guarantee outcomes — we help you operate a functioning, evidence-based system.
Q5. How much does SiteWise cost?
SiteWise charges an annual licence and assessment fee based on contractor level. ThinkSafe membership is separate and helps reduce consultant preparation costs by enabling you to maintain evidence continuously instead of creating paperwork at audit time.
Q6. How long does SiteWise assessment take?
Once submitted, your assessment is reviewed by qualified assessors. Timeframes vary, but well-organised submissions with current evidence are generally processed faster.
Q7. Do I need a dedicated health and safety manager for SiteWise?
No. SiteWise assesses whether your system is appropriate for your size and risk level, not job titles. With ThinkSafe, owners, supervisors and crews can all contribute to activity records through the mobile app.
Q8. Can ThinkSafe guarantee a specific SiteWise score or grade?
No — scoring is determined independently by SiteWise assessors and clients choose their acceptance thresholds. ThinkSafe helps you strengthen evidence quality and organisation, but does not influence the grading decision.
Q9. How often do I need to renew SiteWise?
SiteWise is normally renewed annually. Assessors expect recent evidence, which is why continuous system use in ThinkSafe makes renewal easier than rebuilding records each year.
Q10. Can my SiteWise evidence also be used for Tōtika or PREQUAL?
In most cases yes — the same inspections, meetings, incidents and training records are relevant across multiple schemes. ThinkSafe lets you reuse live evidence instead of recreating it for each assessment, including Tōtika and IMPAC PREQUAL, and in many cases SHE Pre-Qual as well.
ThinkSafe's pre-qualification guides are developed with HASANZ-registered health and safety professionals. Our goal is to help contractors understand scheme requirements and demonstrate genuine H&S practice—because the best way to meet pre-qualification standards is to actually operate a working safety system.
